A Plan0

I was reminded recently of a recipe book my mom picked up for my college-bound brother. He has a small kitchen, a little time and a desire for some homecooked meals. The recipe book was entitled, “A Man, a Can and a Plan.” It contained very simple recipes that each had a canned item in its ingredient list. Within a half hour he had a simple, declicious meal that didn’t require a dictionary to interpret.

Some times I wish we each had a recipe book for our lives.  We all have ingredients: skills, talents, values, interests, etc. If only somebody could put together a simple, step-by-step recipe to follow in order to get a successful career at the end. Unfortunately, our individual recipe books don’t exist. Instead we rely on something a little less concrete-instinct and some good luck.

Well, I’m happy to report that there’s a little more help out there. I’ve been helping students these past few weeks figure out where they want to be when they finish at Ridge View High School. We’re discovering interests, skills and values through Kuder Assessment tests. The results show different job possibilities. In reality, it’s much like an online recipe book. You tell it what ingredients you have and out pops the “meal” you can make. It even gives you the steps you need to make that recipe-like a college education or on-the-job training.

It can be hard trying to figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life just like it can be hard making a new recipe. Just remember with the right tools, ingredients, instructions and information anything is possible. Stop by the College and Career Center and we can help you become the Master Chef of your life.

KUDER Assessment-funny name, serious business1

OK, this is my first year here. I’ve learned a few things in my short time, to include some important, if not interesting lingo. Ms. Holland decided to fill me in on how we assist students with finding their niche in the real world. And here’s where I heard for the first time an interesting phrase-KUDER Assessment (pronounced coo-der). I’ll be honest…when I first heard it I thought it was kinda strange…much like many of you.

Yes, KUDER is indeed the main tool we use to help students find their way in life. It can be a noun. It can be a verb. It is often said and then followed by snickers. While it may not be the coolest word, I will say it and be proud. Why? Because it is a GREAT resource. You can take assessment tests that will let you know what skills you have, what your values are and which careers you are interested in. You can research colleges, scholarships, jobs and more. You can even start a resume! This thing really is an all in one resource.

So students-keep an ear out for KUDER Assessments. You will hear it because we’re coming to your classes to make sure you know how to use it. It may be a funny name, but it’s serious business. (By the way parents, you and your student can explore this website from the comfort of your own home. www.sc.kuder.com Check it out!)
